Discourse Programme

The themes of the artistic programme are also reflected in our discourse formats. This ranges from talks with world-renowned theorists, through two panel discussions, to our daily informal Stammtisch gatherings.

Talking on Water
The two «Talking on Water» discussions on the lake stage will focus on attacks on democracy. On 16 August, philosopher and author Jason Stanley – who left the US due to the current political climate and now teaches in Canada – will speak about how democratic societies are coming under pressure through the gradual normalisation of authoritarian narratives. On 22 August, Basel-based social scientists Oliver Nachtwey and Carolin Amlinger will discuss their latest book «Zerstörungslust» and the question of why so many people want to see democracy go up in flames. Both events are free of charge and open to all without the need for a ticket.

The Art of Democracy – two panel discussions
Together with the Team Ensemble Foundation, we are inviting experts to reflect on the potential of art and culture to strengthen the resilience of democracy in two panel discussions. On 23 August: «Kultur braucht Demokratie – braucht Demokratie Kultur?» and on 30 August: «Kulturinstitutionen als gesellschaftliche Akteure» Admission is free.

Stammtisch
Our «Stammtisch» offers the chance to chat with guests every evening and explore topics from the programme in greater depth. Guests include Nabil Al-Raee (former artistic director of the Freedom Theatre in Jenin), Mandy Abu Shoak (member of the cantonal parliament and human rights activist) and Bendix Fesefeldt (theatre director and dramaturg), as well as medico international Switzerland. Every day from 14 to 29 August!
