What happened? In recent years, right-wing parties have been elected not despite, but because of their attacks on democratic values and structures. Through numerous interviews, Carolin Amlinger and Oliver Nachtwey have explored how the breakdown of liberal democracy’s promise of freedom, participation and social security can give rise to a destructive urge – a phenomenon they describe in their book «Zerstörungslust». The Basel-based social scientists received the Geschwister Scholl Prize last year for their work and will discuss what it takes to counter this form of democratic fascism.
