Boris Charmatz
Somnole
Boris Charmatz has captivated Zurich audiences on several occasions – now he returns with a solo that cuts deep. In his celebrated piece «Somnole», the exceptional artist enters the fluid state between dreaming and wakefulness. But Charmatz doesn’t just dance – he becomes the instrument himself: whistling, breathing, stomping, he creates a visceral soundscape that draws the audience into a hypnotic experience. «Somnole» is both an intimate act of self-revelation and a remarkable feat of physical presence – an unforgettable evening with one of the defining figures of contemporary dance.

Boris Charmatz is one of the most important contemporary dancers and choreographers. For his piece «Somnole», he radically needs only himself; he is both performer and sound body, breathing, stomping, and whistling, providing the soundtrack for the evening. Gesture creates sound, and from this, like in a dream, the next impulse arises. «Somnole», which translates to «sleepy», explores the body from a resting, semi-conscious, perhaps remembering state. From here, the subconscious, dreams, and the stories inscribed in the body are allowed to speak.
In an impressive physical performance, using all the means his body provides, Charmatz surrenders to a flow of associations that emerge before our eyes, only to disappear again, as in dreams, leaving us with what is present: a breath, the shape of a foot, the texture of the skin, or a wrinkle in the costume.
Boris Charmatz is a dancer, choreographer, author and the director of Tanztheater Pina Bausch in Wuppertal. After last appearing at the festival in 2019 with «Terrain. A Dance Ground for Zurich», a dance laboratory in the open air that involved a wide audience through workshops and performances, he now returns to the Theater Spektakel with «Somnole», bringing an intimate and powerful piece to the grand stage at the Werft.
