French director Philippe Quesne is a conjurer of unique atmospheres, famous for his poetic yet bizarrely cheerful apocalyptic scenarios. Somewhere between theatre and visual art, he creates quirky worlds full of deeply relaxed and charming creatures that you can’t help but fall in love with.
In «Farm Fatale», this is no different. We find ourselves in a post-apocalyptic world after an unspecified environmental catastrophe. There are no humans left, and even the animal world seems to have disappeared. Only five incredibly likeable scarecrows have survived and come together in a small commune on a former farm. Since there are no birds left, they now focus on other activities: they lovingly record the dying sounds of nature, prepare protest signs and slogans, make music that they broadcast over pirate radio – and conduct an interview with the last surviving bee. Along the way, they discuss existential topics such as turbo cows, the extinction of insects, and pesticides, while dreaming of a better future.
Philippe Quesne has created a theatrical evening that is both activist and sad, tender and catastrophic, ironic and magical. In the abstract farm setting on the lakeside stage, straw bales lie scattered like props from a long-past time. Our time – fatally so.
