The water is rising – faster, higher, more relentless. People are left out in the rain – up to their knees, then their waists, then their necks. Some live further uphill, others drive off in their 4×4s. And when the rain finally stops, the asphalt is too hot to touch. So what now?
Bernese artist Piet Baumgartner creates theatre evenings, installations, performances and films. His first feature film, «Bagger Drama», was recently shown in Swiss cinemas and won awards at international festivals. His artistic work often involves everyday machines – diggers, kettles, drones, even ball-throwing machines – and other devices that structure and sustain our lives. Over the past years, he has regularly collaborated with theatremaker Julia Reichert and the scenographers Katrin Murbach and Fabian Jaggi of Ortreport. While Ortreport creates poetic spatial interventions in public settings, Julia Reichert, as a theatre director, continues to challenge the boundaries of what theatre can be.
For the Zürcher Theater Spektakel, the team turns its attention to the machines that define our present – and to a theme just as central to it. Fair winds and following seas!
