Laurie Anderson is an icon – a statement that is easily made, though it’s harder to pin down a single artistic discipline for this New Yorker. Over the past 50 years, she has not only produced and released groundbreaking experimental music but also created numerous performances, made films, written books, participated in exhibitions such as documenta, and collaborated with artists such as John Cage and William S. Burroughs. For good reason, she is regarded as a pioneer of multi- media art. Her performances are immersive, drawing from an extensive reference system and unified by a sustained engagement with the grand themes of feminism, technology, and language. Most re- cently, in 2024, she unveiled the latest chapter of her legendary Gesamtkunstwerk about the United States with «ARK–United States Part 5» in Manchester.

In 1982, Laurie Anderson presented «United States Parts 1–4» at the Zürcher Theater Spektakel, one of only four venuesworldwide to host this monumental work. In 2020, she produced the audio piece «Night Picnic» for the festival, which became the inaugural magical evening of «Collective Listening» during the pandemic.
