«Girls» brings the stories of three generations of women to the stage: four performers share autobiographical accounts of growing up, their first sexual experiences, and the fear of unwanted pregnancy – drawing on the perspectives of their mothers and grandmothers. Their stories are both personal and political; they vividly demonstrate how concepts of female sexuality and societal gender roles have evolved across generations in (post-)Yugoslav societies. However, progress is fragile: while mothers once enjoyed reproductive freedoms, legal access to safe abortion is now being restricted again in Croatia due to political pressure from right-wing conservative and religious forces. In other countries, the sexual and reproductive rights of women, trans, non-binary, and queer people are similarly threatened and limited. Will the experiences of future generations mirror those of their grandmothers?
This documentary theatre piece is inspired by workshops with young people in Rijeka and builds on the «Sex Education II» performance series, in which Ljubljana-based director Tjaša Črnigoj explores the topic of sexual rights.
