Jéssica Teixeira

Monga

Fortaleza

«I’m not afraid of my body. If I were, would you feel more comfortable?» In her solo work «Monga», Jéssica Teixeira places her naked body centre stage – confronting norms, deviations, and our own insecurities. Shattered mirrors and a disco ball scatter the light, opening up perspectives and inviting the audience to question internalised boundaries. «Monga» is a fierce performance about marginalised bodies and the transformative energy of community.

Shattered mirrors and the shimmer of a disco ball refract the light – opening up new perspectives and inviting the audience to question the boundaries of internalised certainties and to collectively imagine alternative futures. In Monga, award-winning Brazilian director, writer and performer Jéssica Teixeira casts a stark light on the brutality with which societal notions of so-called normality impact bodies.

Inspired by the tragic story of Julia Pastrana – an Indigenous Mexican artist exhibited in European freak shows in the 19th century – Teixeira creates a radically contemporary and deeply personal solo performance infused with gripping songs and philosophical reflection. She confronts colonial entanglements as well as current forms of discrimination, ableism, fetishisation and artistic self-empowerment. Monga is a piece about presence – about bodies coming together in the theatre space.
