A poisoned river, the Munduruku women, and the power of resistance: In «Tapajós», Gabriela Carneiro da Cunha weaves together art, documentary exploration, and activism. Through analogue photography and a poetic yet informative sound collage, she amplifies the voices of a threatened ecosystem – a ritual tribute to the mothers of water, forest, and future.

The Tapajós, a mighty tributary of the Amazon, symbolises the destruction of entire eco-systems in the Brazilian rainforest. Through illegal gold mining, its waters are contaminated with highly toxic mercury – with catastrophic consequences for both people and nature.Brazilian artist Gabriela Carneiro da Cunha dedicates her long-term artistic research to these wounded river landscapes and their inhabitants. At the heart of her work are encounters with wom- en from the Munduruku community – resistance fighters whose bodies, and those of their children, are particularly threatened by mercury. These meetings gave rise to «Tapajós», a documentary testimonythat amplifies the voices of the river’s inhabitants – both human and non-human. Through analogue photography, a technique oncereliant on mercury, the traces of destruction and resist- ance are revealed. Faded black-and-white photographs emerge and fill the performance space, becoming poetic testimonies of an otherwise invisible world. «Tapajós» is an artistic alliance with the mothers of all beings – of river, forest, animals and people – inviting us to experience the river as a living presence.
