Tiago Rodrigues, Portuguese theatre director and artistic director of the renowned Festival d’Avignon, met with aid workers in crisis zones and distilled their accounts into a powerful performance. It tells of departures into dangerous territories, the constant balancing act between duty, risk and a longing for home – only to return to a place that, after all they have been through, feelsunfamiliar and fragile. What drives people to risk their lives for others? What sacrifices do they make, and how do they live on with what they have witnessed?
The piece brings together intimate insights and global realities, revealing how closely courage and fear, closeness and distance, hope and despair are held together. A deeply human and moving reflection on responsibility, compassion and the vulnerability of our world.
