Artist, queer activist and gifted singer Ivo Dimchev is known for his exuberant performances and his playfully provocative engagement with audiences. With «DI/Strauss Technique», he de-livers another coup – somewhere between a work-out session, a participatory loveletter and a karaoke show.
As a queer operetta guru with the attitude of a Club Med fitness instructor, Dimchev draws the audience in. The aim is simple: to sing together, laugh to the point of tears, and escape the complexity of the world for 90 minutes. Goodie bags await on each seat, and ten pop songs loosely inspired by the «King of Waltz» (Johann Strauss II) provide the necessary dose of kitsch. But things are not quite as light as they seem.
The piece genuinely sets out to lift the collective mood and is also, at its core, an emancipatory project. Contemporary themesof sexual self-determination, emotional resilience and toxic relationships are woven into this energetic and self-ironic performance experience.
«DI/Strauss Technique» is an ode to desire and to queer community – and an invitation to move beyond states of powerlessness and isolation.
