This is nothing short of megalomania: a performance on the creation and demise of a civilisation. Yet, in «La Trilogie des Contes Immoraux (pour Europe)», Phia Ménard once again succeeds in putting grand and potent images on stage.
The threepart epos by this soughtafter French artist offers a wonderful opportunity to think about a world which failed to foresee its downfall and is now faced with an uncertain future. In the first part, Ménard, as a punk warrior, creates a cardboard version of the Athenian Parthenon. In the second part, enslaved workers erect a shaky, yet seemingly endless phallic tower – as a parable for patriarchy and ultraliberalism, domination and submission. Finally, Ménard returns to the stage and experiences the impossible.
The trilogy is a powerful visual feat. It also offers a rare queerfeminist view of Europe’s history and identity. «An impressive political and mythological vision of our preapocalyptic world», Le Monde wrote following the world premiere of the œuvre at the Festival d’Avignon in 2021. (ss)
