At the beginning of the year, we received the sad news that the Congolese choreographer and dancer Dorine Mokha died at the age of 31. Dorine, who presented the musical-theatrical video installation «Hercules of Lubumbashi» at last year’s festival together with Elia Rediger, was one of the most important artists in his home country. In his work, he tackled issues related to postcolonial questions as well as the political implications of identity and sexuality. At the Berlin Biennale 2020, for example, he presented a piece dealing with the situation of the Congolese LGBT community. With Dorine Mokha the art and performance scene loses a major creative force. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Dorine’s relatives and friends.
