Dear Theater Spektakel audience
Despite the many pandemic restrictions, there has been quite some movement in Zurich’s cultural landscape over the past year. In November, the large majority of voters endorsed a new funding for dance and theatre in Zurich. This demonstrates the importance we attach to the cultural life of Zurich – especially in times when we miss it. Culture and art are not only hugely important to our city, but to our society as a whole. They allow us to experience a different perception. They show us new perspectives. They have us discover beauty, often where we do not expect it and when we need it most.
The pandemic is a global challenge. Nevertheless, existing inequalities have not been swept aside, but in many places they have been accentuated or become even more obvious. In recent months, art has been produced under the most difficult circumstances in places where crises overlap. The Zürcher Theater Spektakel once again brings artists from such places and from different backgrounds to Zurich. This multitude of perspectives can help us to recognise what we have in common and where we differ, promoting participation by as many people as possible.
Zurich is a dynamic and innovative city where solidarity with each other is important. The Zürcher Theater Spektakel gives us the opportunity to sharpen our awareness of places and perspectives beyond our horizon – and to acknowledge the need of solidarity. Art is also predestined to help us do so.
I wish an inspiring and exciting Theater Spektakel 2021 for all of us.
What have you missed in the past months when virtual cultural events were all that was on offer? What was missing? For us, the answer is obvious: fellowship. It is the interaction between audience and artists, a sense of community and, not least, the sound of applause. The Zürcher Theater Spektakel epitomises what we have missed. It creates space for diverse encounters, opens up new perspectives and relates stories of the world and its events. So, we are especially looking forward to this year’s festival.
It is more important than ever to contribute to cultural diversity and to encourage talented young people to present their artistic works on stage. We are committed to creating sustainable experiences and celebrating our cultural fellowship in the future.
We wish you, dear audience, an inspiring festival and lots of applause!

The pandemic has accelerated some developments and thwarted others. While our usually super-mobile society has been brought almost to a halt, we have nevertheless been connected with each other in unprecedented ways. Both these developments have also influenced the festival. It connects people from all over the world to participate in the event, no matter where in the world they are located.
The Zürcher Theater Spektakel turns the Landiwiese into a particularly attractive late-sum- mer location. The festival has always offered us the opportunity for a closer look into the world, mak- ing it one of the most important events for con- temporary performing arts in Europe.
For more than 40 years, it has made extraordinary contributions to the cultural development of our city. We are pleased that our continuing support offers people the opportunity to find in the Theater Spektakel’s productions much food for thought.
Swiss Re wishes you an extraordinary festival.

The pandemic restrictions have put our flexibility truly to the test – working from home, un- able to meet friends and no vacations abroad. Yet somehow, we have managed it all. All? No! The arts must stay; that’s non-negotiable! During this crisis, I have become even more aware of how vital art is for our mental well-being.
Art opens up spaces for reflection and discussion. Art allows us to see the world through the eyes of others. Art offers beauty and nourishment even in difficult times. That is why art must take place, especially in times of crisis.
Cultural workers have gone through many difficult months. It is about time for virtual plat- forms to be replaced by real stages on the Landiwiese. The Zürcher Theater Spektakel welcomes the world! After one year of «frenetic standstill», it sends a strong signal for art and its indispensability. A heartfelt «thank you» to everyone who has made this unique festival possible.

Greeting from our Mediapartner
This is good news: The Theater Spektakel will take place this year and present various performances on the Landiwiese and at other venues. Planning has been hampered by a great deal of uncertainties. All the more remarkable is the noticeable commitment to offer the audience a unique experience.
Numerous international artists will bring new life to our city and our country. It will be particular- ly exciting to see how the difficult months during the pandemic are reflected in the arts and how the spectators will react to their regained freedom.
To all those involved in the festival and to the esteemed audience, we wish a wonderful The- ater Spektakel with many surprising, impressive and inspiring moments.
